Judaic Art; Encaustic, Collage and Oil Paintings

Welcome to my Gallery, feel free to contact me if you are interested in owning some of my original art work, or with your opinions and comments.

Encaustic is Greek for "burning in". It refers to the process of melting beeswax, painting, and then burning in by means of passing a heat source over the painting to seal and unify the wax. This was an ancient art practiced mostly in Egypt and Rome, extinct until relatively recently. There has been a renewed interest in Encaustic art mostly owing to electricity which has made heating the wax much less of a chore than it was in ancient times. Of course the beauty of the art is what attracts artists, but it helps to have the right equipment. Despite the renewed interest, there are still very few authentic Encaustic artists due the very demanding nature of the medium which can be difficult to control due to it's liquid state and rapid solidification.

When you look at an Encaustic painting, you see the depths of color and texture which makes this medium so unique. The effects that can be created are unlimited and sometimes are unexpected.  Encaustic painting is often enhanced with collage, producing even more effects and originality.

My Encaustic paintings are painted using mostly handmade paints. I mix the wax with resin and pigments to create specialized colors and textures. I prefer to mix my own paints and control the medium to my specifications. Much of my art is based on Judaic concepts and Bibilical passages.

I also paint in oils, but currently I am deeply involved with Encaustic, I love the immediacy of the painting, the expression, and the luminous color. I also like the smell of the beeswax but that's just a bonus.
